Tushar Kiran Moodgal, a celebrated poet and Japanese language interpreter, has once again showcased his profound understanding of human nature and Japanese philosophy with his poetry collection Bushido Blossoms: Poetic Path of Honour and this collection draws inspiration from the code of the Samurai—Bushido—delving into themes of honour, courage, resilience, and duty.
Through the evocative medium of Senryu poetry, Moodgal navigates the timeless lessons of these legendary warriors, weaving their ethos into a rich drapery that resonates with readers across cultures and generations.
In his own words, Moodgal reflects, “Bushido Blossoms: Poetic Path of Honour explores the ethos of Bushido through the lens of Senryu poetry. These concise yet powerful verses reflect on themes of honour and resilience echoing the spirit of the Samurai and their unwavering dedication to duty. Through meticulous study and introspection, I have endeavoured to capture the essence of Japanese culture and convey it through the art of poetry.” This statement encapsulates the depth of his connection to Japanese traditions, which serves as the cornerstone of this poetic work.
Moodgal’s fascination with Japanese culture and philosophy stems from his early years, and he credits this influence for shaping both his poetic voice and worldview. “I have been drawn to the uniqueness of Japanese culture from a very early age. Its distinctiveness is noteworthy, yet it resonates with several aspects of Indian culture. The works of philosophers, scholars, and poets such as Issai Chozanshi, Kokugaku no shitaijin, Yamamoto Tsunetomo, Inazo Nitobe, Ueda Akinari, and the fabled Miyamoto Musashi have had a profound impact on me,” he explains.
This statement reflects Moodgal’s reverence for the wisdom embedded in Japan’s intellectual and cultural heritage. Through Bushido Blossoms, he pays homage to this lineage by distilling the philosophies of great figures like Musashi and Yamamoto into poems that balance brevity with depth. Each verse is a testament to Moodgal’s ability to draw philosophical insights from history and translate them into universally relatable ideas.
