Félix Sánchez: Head coach of the Qatar national team.
Sanchez, 44, is currently leading a young Qatar squad that has players from the team that won the AFC U-19 Asian Cup four years ago. The Spaniard has managed the national team at two events – the 23rd Gulf Cup in Kuwait and the International Friendly Tournament in Iraq – which Qatar won in March 2018.
The Spaniard – who has managed Qatar’s youth teams for a few years now – has considerable experience of handling the country’s impressive lot of young players now appearing for the senior side. He led Qatar to the AFC Asian Cup title for the first time in 2019 tournament, won all three group matches and knockout stage matches including a 3–1 win over Japan in the final, scoring 19 times and conceding one goal.
Sanahez’s astute tactics helped Qatar to a string of notable performances at the 2019 Copa America held in Brazil, where the maroons came back from a two-goal deficit against Paraguay to register a 2-2 draw before losing narrowly to powerhouses Colombia and Argentina with an identical 0-1 scoreline in the other group matches.
He arrived in Qatar in 2006 after being a coach at the Barcelona youth setup. He joined the Aspire Academy. In 2013, he was appointed coach of the Qatar Under-19 team. Sanchez won the AFC U-19 Championship held in Myanmar as Qatar beat North Korea in the final.
In January 2018, he led Qatar to finish third in the 2018 AFC U-23 championship held in China.
