WHAT IS FEMINISM?
Feminism is an ideology that aims to establish equality of rights and opportunities in the economic, social and political spheres, for all genders, and ensuring that diverse women and girls have the same opportunities in life available to boys and men. It is important to understand that Nature doesn't discriminate men from women, the whole concept of 'gender roles' is a social construct.
Since the past few centuries women had been confined to the domestic sphere and were treated as passive citizens. The subjugation faced by women on a daily basis led to the emergence of the feminist movement in the 19th century.
The Feminist movement can be divided into 3 waves.
THE FIRST WAVE OF FEMINISM
the first wave refers to the West's first sustained political movement dedicated to achieving political equality for women: the suffragettes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The wave formally began at the Seneca Falls Convention outlining the new movement's ideology and political strategies. The first wave was connected with the abolitionist movement in the USA at the time. Both movements aimed at social reformation and liberation from oppression. Many first wave feminists believed that suffrage was the key to unlocking other rights. However for other groups of women, especially Black and Asian women, the right to vote was also tied to their race and social class. As the movement progressed, the concerns of women of colour were often overlooked by white feminists.
American first wave feminism came to an end with the 19th Amendment to the US constitution in 1919, granting women voting rights.
Despite its faults, the first wave laid the groundwork for future feminists and played a vital role in giving women basic legal rights.
