There are compelling financial benefits as well. An investment in a senior citizen home carries all the benefits of any real estate property investment ownership, the right to sell or rent or occupy when necessary and bequeathing it to the next of kin. Sale and rental values are determined by the going rates in the locality. Running costs of maintenance, nursing services, medical care are usually lower than in the open market due to economies of scale and staff on the rolls of the care provider. Makes me wonder! What are we waiting for?
The perceived stigma of moving to a senior citizen home still lingers among seniors, and a lot more in our younger family members who see it as a place for the old to give up on life and move into an assisted living facility. It is hard to face the reality that we may indeed need these facilities as it increasingly becomes difficult to manage on our own. There is also the dread of being in the company of too many frail and wheelchair bound people. Adarsh said, “I urge those who think senior citizen homes are dreadful places, where elders come because they can no longer manage on their own and don’t get along well with their children, to visit Primus Reflection and see for themselves the vibrant, cheerful and active community of elders. Children and grandchildren visit often and are happy to see their elders living so cheerfully.”
The stigma around senior citizen homes comes from the early heritage of these homes. Elders were moved in when they were infirm, and the micro families just couldn’t manage them. They lived with the guilty feeling that to send a parent to one of these homes meant that the family was abdicating its responsibilities. The elderly parents felt there were being abandoned. The situation today is far different. Senior citizen homes offer security, care, medical and emergency facilities, abundant group activities and ambience to suit a wide range of budgets.
