Today I went to the Airforce Museum and came across this.
Flying officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was a pilot of the Gnat sqn detachment based at Srinagar during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. On 14 Dec 1971 Srinagar was attacked by six Pakistani Saber jets who began bombing and strafing the airfield. Disregarding personal safety and mortal danger, Sekhon immediately took off in his Gnat and engaged the Sabers. He managed to destroy two aircraft and damaged the third one. The other Sabers joined the battle and outnumbered him. Though over whelmed, the young officer fought on but was killed.
The sublime heroism, supreme gallantry, strong determination and flying skill displayed by Fg. Offr Sekhon in the face to death, gave new heights to IAF traditions. He was awarded the ParamVir Chakra posthumously
