Why lunar south pole was chosen as landing site?
ISRO chief S Somanath on why ISRO chose the South Pole of the moon for Chandrayaan-3's landing; said, “We have gone closer to the South Pole which is 70 degrees almost. The South Pole has a specific advantage with respect to being less illuminated by the sun.”
– "There is a potential because of to have more scientific content...Scientists who are working on the moon showed a lot of interest in the South Pole because ultimately human beings want to go & create colonies and then travel beyond. So the best place is something we are looking for & the South Pole has the potential to be that..."
How is this mission different from Chandrayaan-2?
India’s Moon mission Chandrayaan-3, in a giant leap for its space programme, successfully touched down on the lunar south pole on Wednesday.
– Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 and its objectives are to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, roving on the Moon, and to conduct in-situ scientific experiments.
– Chandrayaan-2 had failed in its lunar phase when its lander 'Vikram' crashed into the surface of the Moon minutes before the touch down following anomalies in the braking system in the lander while attempting a landing on September 7, 2019.
