1 FSSAI banned sassafras oil due to its high content of erucic acid, which can cause heart disease.
2 Since 2008, the FSSAI has prohibited Chinese milk and milk products, including infant formula, due to many contamination concerns in China.
3 In 2014, foie gras was prohibited in India due to ethical problems with the production method, which involves force-feeding ducks or geese to inflate their liver.
4 In 2016, FSSAl also prohibited the use of potassium bromate, which is used to promote dough elasticity and bread volume, because of its carcinogenic qualities.
5 Artificial fruit ripeners including calcium carbide and ethylene gasare banned due to health concerns. The former releases acetylene gas, a well-known carcinogen.
6 India has placed limitations on the production and import of genetically modified foods and products, due to environmental effects, the loss of biodiversity, and health hazards.
7 The FSSAl prohibited the import of Chinese garlic in 2019 after finding elevated pesticide residue levels.
