For the first time in 2500 years of Buddhist history, 145 nuns from various countries gathered in Shravasti, a holy Buddhist site where Buddha spent 25 of his retreats, to participate in the annual summer retreat (yarney), which begins on 1 August 2023.
The summer retreat was made possible under the grace and generous support of Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. The majority of the participating nuns are from the United States, Taiwan, Vietnam, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and France.
In 2019, 108 senior Theravada monks from Myanmar and Sri Lanka took part in the annual summer retreat at Shravasti under the same programme.
