Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and late Congress leader Virbhadra Singh shared a good rapport with all his political rivals, sometimes to the extent of antagonizing his own party colleagues.
He would often be criticised for his bonhomie with arch-rivals. Being a mass leader, he would never indulge in petty politics and always take on the rivals on issues concerning Himachal Pradesh.
That is why he was liked and respected by all.
Paying tributes to the former Chief Minister soon after his death on 8 July this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "Shri Virbhadra Singh Ji had a long political career, with rich administrative and legislative experience. He played a pivotal role in Himachal Pradesh and served the people of the state. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti."
Former Chief Minister and his arch-rival in Himachal politics Shanta Kumar wrote an obit in The Tribune, lavishing effusive praise on late Raja Sahib.

Former chief minister and and another arch political rival Prem Kumar Dhumal described Raja Sahib as a great fighter, who faced a lot of struggles in life. “He faced the challenges, whether they were personal, political or social, bravely and never accepted defeat,” Dhumal said, adding that an era has ended in Himachal Pradesh.
Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said Virbhadra Singh’s contribution towards the development of the state were unprecedented. He further said Raja Sahib devoted his entire life to the uplift of every section of society, with special focus on weaker and vulnerable sections. The void created by Virbhadra Singh’s death would be difficult to fill, he added.
In the pictures, Virbhadra Singh can be seen with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Ministers Shanta Kumar and Prem Kumar Dhumal, and also with current Chief Minister Jairam Thakur (all from the BJP).
