An "insulting" fundraiser for the family of the French police officer who shot 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk has raised over €1 million (£840,000). The fundraiser, organized by Jean Messiha, a former adviser to far-right politician Marine Le Pen, has received significantly more donations than the page set up for the family of the victim. The page for Nahel's family has raised just over €200,000 (£171,918). Critics argue that the fundraiser for the officer's family is inappropriate and only fuels hate. The officer, who has been charged with murder and is in custody, is said to be paying a high price for "doing his job." The riots in France, sparked by the police shooting of Nahel, have shown signs of slowing down after six consecutive nights of violence. Overnight arrests decreased, and mayors across the country organized anti-violence rallies in solidarity with the local governments affected by the riots.
