No.7 seed Andrey Rublev failed to make it through to the French Open men’s singles Round 4 after losing 7-5, 6-0. 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 3-6 to Lorenzo Sonego on Friday, May 2. After winning the first two sets, it seemed to be an absolute cakewalk for Rublev, but his opponent showed nerves of steel to stage a comeback and win the match in three hours and 42 minutes.
It also happens to be Sonego’s sixth victory against a top 10 opponent. After losing the first two sets, Sonego started playing more aggressively and used the forehand to good effect. Sonego also made his way into a Grand Slam fourth round for the third time and will next face Karen Khachanov, who defeated Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis earlier in the day.
"It is a miracle. I played my best tennis today. It was tough after one hour when I was two sets down. It was an incredible comeback today. Thanks for all the support,” Sonego said.

Mertens knocks out Pegula
In another major upset, World No.3 Jessica Pegula was knocked out in the very first match of the day. The 28-year-old lost 1-6, 3-6 to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the Round 3 match.
Mertens broke Pegula’s serve three times in the opening set to put pressure on the American. Pegula earned break back in the second set, but her joy was only short-lived as Mertens stormed into a 4-3 lead.
Pegula had a chance to break Mertens’ serve, but the Belgian ended up with the lead. The American had an opportunity to hold serve, but Mertens earned another break to pull the curtains down on the match.
