Coco Gauff, on Wednesday, June 7, bowed out of the French Open 2023 after losing to World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the women’s singles quarter-final. On Court Philippe Chatrier, the 19-year-old fought hard, but ended up losing the match 4-6, 2-6.
Gauff put Swiatek under immense pressure by earning a break in the first set. But her joy was short-lived as her Polish opponent did not allow her to dominate. Gauff realised that she showed glimpses of her very best at stages, although she was not up to the mark overall. Swiatek won a total of four breaks to brush Gauff aside.
"I tried to change up a different way of how I played. Obviously, I did not win, so it did not work, but I think on certain points it did. But, yeah, I have to figure something out,” Gauff said after the match.
Gauff also talked about her match against 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva where she made a comeback after losing the opening set.
"I'm proud of how I was able to turn around the season. I think especially those wins in the first round and then against Mirra (Andreeva),” she stated.
Found the mental adjustments: Coco Gauff
Gauff, who finished as the women’s singles runners-up last season, also talked about the need of mental adjustments to succeed under pressure.
"In the past I would say after losing the first set it's been pretty tough for me to get back in the match, and I think that this tournament I really found that I guess the mental adjustments that I need to make in the game," Gauff added.
Gauff, in the meantime, lost her seventh match on the WTA circuit against Swiatek, who is looking to successfully defend the title and retain her No.1 ranking. Gauff will look to make amends when the Wimbledon takes place later this year.
