Not too long ago it was hard to imagine Arsenal fans accepting the idea of Kieran Tierney leaving the club.
Following his 2019 arrival, Tierney quickly became a fan’s favourite. At a time where there was a real disconnect between players and fans, Tierney was a player who finally ‘got it’. Too many players at the club were often lacking in heart and passion, seemingly more interested in pay-cheques than performances. The players didn’t want to win anywhere near as badly as the fans did, and were much less hurt by defeat.
Tierney embodied the passion of the fanbase. He sprinted up and down the left-flank chasing every loose pass, pressuring every heavy touch. Despite being a Celtic supporter, fans knew he was ready to die on that pitch to get the win. If there was any player on those disappointing teams who deserved the success seemingly on today’s horizon, it was our left-back.
So what changed?
Tierney has struggled with injuries throughout his career, and previously this left Arsenal with a gaping hole to fill. Arsenal fans spent more time worrying about Tierney’s health than their own family member’s, as each layoff meant a huge drop in quality and the absence of a player that carried both defence and attack at times.
By the close of the 2021/22 season the Scot had already missed 48 games through injury. The key turning point was last season however, when he, for the first time, struggled to bounce back. Tierney’s availability issues could previously be forgiven due to his immense quality, however these days he cuts the figure of a man who, arguably understandably, doesn’t trust his own body.
The arrival of Zinchenko and his immense performances along with the tactical alteration of Arsenal’s left-back role, coupled with Tierney’s drop in performance has left him seemingly surplus to requirements. Whilst still a phenomenal player at his best, he simply doesn’t offer the profile of Zinchenko.
Whilst it will be sad to see him go, regular football is needed, and it may be time to say goodbye, with great thanks for all his services.
