Samsung Display aims to potentially introduce fully phosphorescent mobile panels by the second half of 2025, specifically focusing on blue PHOLED (Phosphorescent OLED). While PHOLED is already used for green and red pixels, the shift to blue PHOLED was initially expected in mid-2024 for foldable displays. However, recent reports suggest challenges in developing the blue phosphorescent material, delaying the timeline to the second half of 2025.

PHOLED offers notable advantages, particularly in power consumption. Samsung Display's current blue fluorescent OLEDs have an efficiency of 25%, whereas red and green PHOLEDs boast 100% efficiency, potentially reducing overall power consumption. However, concerns about the durability of blue PHOLED materials persist, with a reported lifespan of 55% compared to blue fluorescent materials.

The application of blue PHOLED to mainstream devices, including 2025 foldable Galaxy phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, remains uncertain due to durability issues. Despite challenges, UBI Research anticipates Samsung Display will continue its blue PHOLED development, aiming to be the world's first manufacturer capable of mass-producing AMOLED panels with blue phosphorescent pixels.
