Some interesting points here.
But I'm surprised how anyone can dismiss Gandhi's beliefs, in his own words, on caste as "episode vs history"!
On "dignity", what good is it if it comes with the sanctification of the silos created by the upper castes? India won independence, but the Dalits remained oppressed.
Gandhi's key insight was weaponising non-violence as a political tool. An idea that said turn the other cheek earned Gandhi incredible moral standing and global respect.
He may be called "mahatma" for it, but Gandhi was only human. And all humans have flaws. Gandhi's views on race, caste, gender and economy vary from inconsistent to problematic.
Remember, if someone is spectacularly good at SOME things, it doesn't mean he is a god at EVERY thing.
It may serve the state to push an enhanced version of history for whatever noble cause, but it doesn't serve the ones who have been wronged.
