After a tremendous career, Bale retires from international football at the age of 33. The 33-year-old led his country to its first World Cup since 1958.
"After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football," Bale said.
Bale's meteoric ascent in football saw him win every conceivable trophy with the teams he played for, from Southampton to Tottenham, and then a world-record £80 million transfer to Real Madrid, where he won five Champions Leagues.
And the player is now a member of the MLS team Los Angeles FC. He has been a crucial factor in helping Wales reach the Euro 2016 semi-finals and eventually the first-ever FIFA World Cup 2022 Since 1958.
Bale was elected player of the year twice while at Tottenham, and his move to Real Madrid cemented his reputation.
He further added "I feel indebted to many people for helping to change my life and shape my career in a way I couldn't have ever dreamed of when I first started out at nine years old.
"To my previous clubs Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and finally LAFC, all of my previous managers and coaches, backroom staff, team-mates, all the dedicated fans, my agents, my amazing friends and family, the impact you have had is immeasurable.
"My parents and my sister, without your dedication in the early days, without such a strong foundation, I wouldn't be writing this statement right now, so thank you for putting me on this path and for your unwavering support.
"My wife and my children, your love and support has carried me through. Right beside me for all the highs and lows keeping me grounded along the way, you inspire me to be better and to make you proud.
During his time at Real Madrid the Welshman made 225 appearances and scored 104 goals for the club, while at Spurs he appeared in 237 games and recorded 73 goals.
