England faced more disappointment at the European Championships, losing to Spain in the final. It marked a successive defeat at the last stage and now reports from talkSPORT suggest Southgate is seriously considering walking away. According to the report, FA chiefs have been briefed on the 53-year-old's departure and they are considering Graham Potter and Eddie Howe as potential replacements.
There is no doubt that England have improved with Southgate at the helm, but there is a general feeling that he has taken them as far as he can from a tactical viewpoint. Potter and Howe both play an attacking brand of football and may be better suited to the current crop of players, whose talents lie in the final third rather than their own half.
England were amongst the lowest scorers at Euro 2024. Croatia (7.10) accumulated more expected goals than the Three Lions (6.43) despite going out in the group stages. Hosts Germany scored three more goals than Southgate's side, even though Julian Nageslmann's men played two games less.
