Good piece👍 Gary Oldman in Dracula was terrific
There have been a ton of versatile actors in Hollywood ranging from Christoph Waltz, Christian Bale, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny Depp, Anthony Hopkins etc but the ultimate vote has to go to Gary Oldman.
Known for almost completely transforming into any role he goes into, Gary Oldman’s versatility and range in acting is ridiculous ranging from Dracula, Winston Churchill, Sirius Black, Commissioner James Gordon, Norman Stansfield etc, he can portray pretty much any role effortlessly ranging from peasant, aristocrat, politician, monster, unhinged psychopathic killer, heroic persona the man can immerse himself into any role so well that it is a bit scary.
Going from a raw, edgy and somewhat unpredictable acting figure in his early days, Oldman has attained the qualities of the greatest chameleon giving out fleshed out natural and effective performances which are the hallmarks of a veteran. Some of Oldman’s biggest roles have been the villainous types and to say that he has done them justice would be a severe understatement.
In ‘Leon : The Professional’ Oldman played Norman Stanfield, a corrupt psychopathic DEA agent with a knack for bursts of insanity who runs a drug operation in New York City. Here, Oldman leaned pretty hard into the idea of creating a character so deliciously horrible and mean that we can’t wait to see a brutal end to him.
However, at the same time in ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ he portrayed a complex and romantic version of Dracula who is as much an evil monster as he is a victim of fate making him both an evil creature and a sympathetic figure who is awesome.
His performance as James Gordon in the Dark Knight trilogy is also one where he portrays a character of great moral character and someone who has to make tough decisions in a corrupt environment.
Going from an evil villain to the more complex hero types in a flash is in itself a highly impressive feat and that makes Oldman’s acting skills a bit scary at times, that his highly realistic portrayals of psychopaths and honourable great men almost make him seem like a shapeshifter.
