The reincarnation of Xavi and Iniesta
Pedri and Gavi performed at their best against arch rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. In opposition to players like Luka Modric, a five-time Champions League champion, and Toni Kroos, the pair controlled the midfield. In a 3-1 victory, both players found the back of the net, with Gavi picking up two assists as well.
In a recent interview, Xavi described Barcelona youngsters Pedri and Gavi as "even better" than himself and fellow legend Andres Iniesta were at the same age.
Xavi and Iniesta, along with Sergio Busquets, achieved incredible things with Barcelona and Spain, winning multiple Champions Leagues, European Championships, and a World Cup.
Pedri and Gavi have set out to follow in those illustrious footsteps, and they have already made an impression, not least on Barcelona manager Xavi.
"We weren't as good as Pedri and Gavi when Iniesta and I were 20 years old," Xavi told BarcaTV. "They are superior to us,"
The two young players have received a lot of praise over the last year, and being compared to players who were their idols when they were kids doesn't necessarily put more pressure on them. Instead, it can serve as an additional source of motivation. "Iniesta is my role model, even though his playing style is very different from mine," Pedri said. "It's flattering to be compared to them, but I need to be Pedri and pursue my own career." Gavi also referred to Iniesta and Verratti as role models, and he strives to emulate them.
FC Barcelona became the first team to have back-to-back Golden Boy winners since the start of this award in 2003. Pedri won it last season; this season, Gavi was the winner of this award given to the best under-21 player.
