Gio Reyna's future in Germany with Borussia Dortmund is still uncertain. After an unsuccessful loan to Nottingham Forest for the second half of the 2023-24 season, he returned to the German club for preseason this summer and has remained since.
Now, on opening day, newly-appointed manager Nuri Sahin has named the 21-year-old to his bench for the clash with Frankfurt.
There is just one week left in the European transfer window, meaning Reyna could still depart the Black and Yellow, but Saturday's teamsheet could point to a potential role in Sahin's plan.
Reyna's career is at a tipping point, as he needs playing time to deliver on his potential. Whether that is at Signal Iduna Park this upcoming campaign, or elsewhere, that has to be his utmost priority.
He was named to the bench a little over a week ago in the DFB Pokal, a 4-1 thumping of FC Phonix Lubeck. However, he went unused in the match, despite their dominance.
Now, once again, he finds himself in the mix, with uncertainty around his role.
Reyna's career-high season for matches played was in 2020-21 as a teenager. Since, he hasn't logged more than 30 matches in a single campaign, with the 23-24 season being the least since his debut season in 2019-20. He made just 24 total appearances across his loan spell with Forest and the first half of the campaign with BVB.
