Sir, there is a general perception that golf is still a rich man's game. What you think of it?
As a leisurely activity golf continues to be a rich man's game. If you look at it as a sport the equation is different. It requires tremendous amount of hard work, dedication and commitment. I have seen that rich people are not able to undertake the grind. It is only passionate sportspersons who are willing to walk the extra mile on and off the golf course
Golf as a sport is gaining popularity in India ever since Ms Aditi Ashok, an Indian lady professional golfer, brought this beautiful game to every second Indian home on the final round of Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Golf is no longer a rich old man's game. Tiger Woods, greatest of all time professional golfer, has made it a highly power packed sport. He has been instrumental in changing the face of professional golf globally.
A similar trend is emerging in India wherein the number of golf lovers is on the rise. There are many Indian men who have made a significant mark in the International and National level golf tournaments. Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal , Anirban Lahiri, Gaganjeet Bhullar and SSP Chawrasia are prominent gentlemen who have been the face of Indian professional golf. Jyoti Randhawa has been by and large the fittest Indian professional golfer of his time.
The current lot of young Indian professional golfers to include Shubhankar Sharma, Viraj Madappa, Yuvraj Singh Sandhu and Manu Gandas are a force to reckon with in the golfing world. These boys are talented and have brought in athleticism. They are ready to not only pose a challenge while playing on the Asian and European Tours but also have the potential to win Majors and medals in Olympics.
It is heartening to see a few corporate houses coming forward to sponsor golf and golfers in India even though the magnitude is way less as compared to cricket. I see Indian golf growing to be the sport of the current decade. To make this happen we need to promote it at the grassroots level. This story is my initiative to make a beginning. A sport to grow requires the support of the community.
Government and the corporate houses need to make it affordable to young people in India. There is a requirement of providing cutting edge training facilities and opportunities to young Indian professional golfers to compete on the Professional Golf Tour of America and DP World Tour.
Parents too have an important role to encourage and support children to take up golf
