Harry Kane has expressed his disappointment with FIFA’s decisions regarding players wearing the ‘One Love’ armbands. Fifa stated that there would be consequences for players and teams who opted to wear the armband when they were out on the field. It was rumoured earlier that a yellow card would be shown to any player who wore the armband. It is understood that England sought advice from the FA and were advised to eventually not wear the armband as players picking up yellow cards could go on to have a significant impact on the match and fixtures later in the tournament.
Kane revealed he had no say in the decision of scrapping the plan to wear the armband and alongside England, six other European skippers planned to wear the armband. However, they took backed down from their plans after hearing FIFA’s thoughts on the matter and the possible consequences. Asked about it after today’s stunning 6-2 Group B win over Iran in Doha, Kane said: ‘ Yeah, I think we’re disappointed. ‘I think I said yesterday we wanted to wear it but that decision was taken out of my hands today. ‘Look, it’s out of our control as players. I’m sure the FA and FIFA will continue those discussions but most importantly today we focused on the game and got a great result.’ As mentioned the FA could not risk Kane getting booked as it would result in suspension in the latter stages of the tournament.
The England skipper was asked if he was angry to which he responded ‘I’m not going to say words to get headlines. ‘I said I was disappointed I wasn’t able to wear it and that’s it.’ Eventually, he wore one of FIFA’s own ‘no discrimination’ armbands. It is understood the Tottenham captain understood and accepted the FA’s stance.
