"Kabuliwala" is a famous short story written by Rabindranath Tagore, a renowned Indian author and poet. The story revolves around the relationship between a young girl named Mini and a Kabuliwala, a fruit seller from Afghanistan.
The Kabuliwala, whose real name is Abdur Rahman, comes to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to sell dry fruits and spices. One day, he meets Mini, a five-year-old girl, and they form an instant bond. Mini reminds him of his own daughter back in Afghanistan, whom he had left behind.
As the Kabuliwala visits Mini's home regularly, their friendship deepens, and he gifts her various trinkets and fruits. However, as time passes, the Kabuliwala is arrested for a misunderstanding, and he is imprisoned.
Years later, when he is released from jail, the Kabuliwala returns to Mini, but she has grown up and doesn't remember him initially. The story ends on a poignant note as Mini's father intervenes, reminding her of the Kabuliwala's identity and how he used to be her dear friend.
The story explores themes of friendship, love, and the universal emotions that connect people despite differences in culture and background. It also delves into the bittersweet reality of time and how relationships can change with its passage...
