SMILES ON THE RINK — Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk entered Wednesday's game against Edmonton on a nine-game goal-less streak.
Apparently, he just needed a challenge from his dad.
DeBrusk's father — former NHL defenseman Louie DeBrusk — is the rink side analyst for Oilers games on SportsNet and on "Hockey Night in Canada." So, naturally, with the Bruins in town, he chose to interview his son before the game — an interview that turned into a very wholesome father-son moment.
"You chirped me last time, but I'm going to go off the page a little bit here," Louie DeBrusk said. "When you were young, you and (sister) Jordyn made us really nice gifts when you were youngsters. And one of them you made the golden ticket."
He pulled out an old piece of paper from his pocket and showed it to Jake, who instantly recognized it.
"You know what, I looked over this whole coupon and it doesn't have an expiry date. So, I'm cashing it in tonight, kiddo. A goal, assist or 30 push-ups right here."
A smiling Jake DeBrusk wasn't too confident in his ability to fulfill the terms if it got to the pushups.
"30 pushups? I don't know if I could do that right now," he said.
Turns out, he can score goals, though.
In the second period, the younger DeBrusk came through with a goal by backhanded a rebound into the net.
"I don't think he wanted to do pushups," said Louie DeBusk on the broadcast when his son scored. "Congratulations, kiddo. Wow!"
DeBrusk's goal helped the Bruins to an overtime win. So the Bruins may be wondering if there are any more of those golden tickets needing to be cashed.
