Now, the Supreme Court of India has also asked the Delhi Police to ensure a complete ban on firecrackers, including green crackers, which have been banned by Delhi government, as reported by the TimesofIndia.
Delhi during Diwali gets suffocating, it does get difficult to even breathe, and this move of Delhi Government, along with Supreme Court's order is a good step to check life-threatening pollution levels in the city during the festive season.
The bench of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh was informed that Delhi government had taken a decision to ban all crackers, the court said police should keep in mind that there was a complete ban and no distinction could be made between firecrackers and green crackers.
Asked by the Bench to brief it on the action taken by police to ensure that polluting crackers were not manufactured, sold or burst in the city, additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati told the court that all necessary steps were being taken to comply with the apex court's order. She submitted that a special team was being set up in each police station to enforce the law and flying squads have been created to raid the premises used for selling and storing crackers.
Bhati said police were co-ordinating with resident welfare associations (RWAs), NGOs, civil society and schools to sensitise people not to burst firecrackers. She informed the bench that police had seized over 50,000 kg of firecrackers since 2016 after the SC's order and 2,616 people were arrested for bursting crackers and 740 for selling crackers during this period.
The bench, however, said, "Cases against persons bursting crackers may not be the solution. You will have to find the source and take action. You need to nip it in the bud, no point in taking action after it has happened.
Bench has asked Bhati to ensure that no licence was issued by police.
Hopefully, this ban will be followed and Delhi won't choke this year.
