In what will likely be the last World Cup for many of Belgium’s golden generation, they will face Canada in Al Rayyan next Wednesday. There are still many question marks in the squad largely due to injury. Here is how the team could look and some replacements.
Coach Roberto Martinez will continue with his 3-4-2-1/3-4-3 formation with the Red Devils. Thibaut Courtois will be in goal, bar an injury between now and kickoff. The backline is still yet to be confirmed, primarily because of Jan Vertonghen as the experienced defender is recovering from an injury. Should he be unable to start, Arthur Theate will take his place in the lineup. Toby Alderweireld is a sure start, with the third center back anyone’s guess. Wout Faes is likelier to get the nod due to better club form though youngster Zeno Debast is not out of the question.
Youri Tielemans and Axel Witsel are the expected central midfield duo for Martinez, with Amadou Onana a possibility should he want to mix it up. The Everton man has featured in Belgium’s Nations League matchups with Netherlands with year. Flanking the CMs should be Timothy Castagne on the left and Thomas Meunier on the right, though the former could see his place be given to Yannick Carrasco instead.
Up front, the one guaranteed start is Kevin De Bruyne, likely on the right-hand side of the attack. Captain Eden Hazard has played very little for Real Madrid this season, so while he would be expected to start on the left, do not be surprised if Martinez opts for someone with more regular minutes. Should he go for someone else, Leandro Trossard is a great shout as he has excelled with Brighton so far this season. The former Genk man is carrying a knock, making him questionable for the match.
Trossard could also start as the striker, though Michy Batshuayi is likely to get the nod there. The Fenerbahçe man may not be assured the start though, as Lens’ Loïs Openda has been in incredible form himself. Romelu Lukaku will likely not take any part in this one.
