Black Panther, which debuted in theatres in 2018, sparked a worldwide sensation and mesmerised viewers.
As per BBC, many hailed it as revolutionary because it was Marvel's first movie with a predominately black cast and their first superhero movie with a black lead.
For many black viewers in particular, it was a watershed moment—the first time they felt like they could see themselves on screen in a significant Hollywood production—from the costumes to the characters' names.
Online debates focused on what African-inspired attire viewers would wear to screenings, viral social media posts featured children beaming with excitement as they learned their schools would be taking them to see it, and black communities around the world organised watch parties and special screenings to commemorate this momentous occasion.
Furthermore, it disproved the widespread belief in the industry that expensive black films could not find success abroad.
In addition to shattering box office records, the movie made history by becoming the first Marvel film to be nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards and winning three awards for best costume design, production design, and original score. It also made history by grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide.
It’s great to see more black representation in Hollywood.
