How Efficient is Multitasking?😯
We all proudly list ‘multitasking’ as a skill on our CVs, but does it really work the way we think it does? With life becoming more demanding and hectic, multitasking often seems like the only way to cope. But are we as good at it as we think?🤔
Multitasking means trying to perform more than one task simultaneously. However, researchers say our brains don't actually work that way! Instead, we switch our focus rapidly from one task to another. Each switch requires a separate start time, monitoring process, and ultimately fragments our attention into tiny bits and pieces, and we end up not engaging completely in any one task. So, this constant switching comes with a cost! We end up being less efficient, making more mistakes, and feeling more stressed😵. The divided attention hampers our productivity and increases our mental effort required to get things done.🤕
Even when we think we are doing two things at once, we are actually just switching quickly between tasks, still focusing on one at a time. So it’s not multitasking. It’s switchtasking! No wonder it’s hard to concentrate on assignments while scrolling through Instagram..Hehe😄
To cope better, we need to practice self-discipline by prioritizing tasks and tackling them one at a time. Let us filter out unnecessary inputs and help ourselves to focus on what truly matters, avoiding distractions. Dedicating a few hours to focus on a single task can lead to much better results.✅
So next time, try to focus and enjoy doing one task at a time. Your brain will thank you! 🧠🌸
