England and France are two of the biggest footballing nations in the world, and it is no surprise that they are both at this stage of the tournament. Mbappe has been the most prolific forward in this competition scoring five goals and providing two assists. So it is no surprise that "how to stop him" has been the biggest talking point in a week. Kyle Walker is the man that many believe will have that responsibility, but the game of football is played with 11 men with possibly an extra five coming off the bench. England will be looking to minimize France's attacking threat and maximize theirs with the amount of talent they have in their squad.
Garry Southgate has shown a level of tactical fluidity over the past few tournaments switching between a back four and back three. Although England haven't played with three at the back this tournament, the game against France could see them make that switch. The last time England played with a back three was against Germany in a game that ended 3-3.
With Pickford as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, Walker, John Stones, and Harry Maguire would be the first choice to form a 3-man defence. This would allow England to deal with France's tricky wingers, Mbappe and Dembele. Although playing with three CBs reduces the effectiveness of the wingers, it reduces the amount of exploitable space they can run into and work with, especially with the help of their wingbacks.
Shaw as the left wingback and Trippier on the opposite flank give England a creative attacking threat going forward, with both players being able to create chances with their exquisite passing and crossing. They would, however, need to be at top fitness and concentration levels to be able to carry out their defensive duties to prevent Mbappe and Dembele from having a free run at their defence.
The midfield is where the real battle would be for most parts of the game, and it is where England should look to assert dominance. That is where France's catalyst -Antoine Griezmann- has been able to operate effectively throughout the tournament.
