Despite their recent form, England remains one of the favorites of the World Cup, with quality in all areas of the field. In the European Championships, they were unlucky to lose the final on penalties. Their fourth-place finish in Russia remains fresh in the mind of fans.
Their terrible display in the Nations League has led to calls that Gareth Southgate be relieved of his duties, but it is implausible the FA will sack the man that guided them to their best finish in the European Championships and World in years.
This England side will be aiming to win the World Cup, something they’ve xx only once in their history. Yet they have the quality to go all the way this time and claim world dominance.
The debate around the England side is which players start and whether they are better playing with a back four.
Without further ado, here’s how England should line up at the world cup.
Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford
Pickford has been the undisputed starter for England since Gareth Southgate took charge of the Three Lions. The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been in decent form this season and is one of the best shot-stoppers in world football.
Pickford is also comfortable with the ball at this and brilliant at disputing the ball, a trait that is crucial for this England side.
Left-back: Luke Shaw
The Manchester United left-back was a vital part of their European Championship run and will be critical again for his country at the World Cup. Shaw scored England’s only goal in the final against Italy. His defensive positioning is much better, and he is also brilliant in 1v1 situations. Offensively, Shaw is also brilliant with his timed runs and crosses.
Right-back: Keiran Trippier
Right-back is where England’s biggest debate is with the Three Lions blessed with the qualities of Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier. All three are excellent full-backs with different strengths and weaknesses.
However, Trippier has been ever-present for Southgate’s side since he took charge in 2016, and it is likely to remain the same at the World Cup.
