The UK has promised to cut its emissions by 78% by 2035 as part of its promise to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, Boris Johnson's government seems to be on track to only reach a fifth of this goal.
There have been some notable succeded. The UK has been able to successfully cut emissions from energy - decreasing these emissions by 40% and leading the world in offshore wind. If the promised increase to quadruple the wind power capacity is achieved, this will create enough energy to power every home in the UK. The government is also encouraging the purchase of electric cars, offering grants to purchase fully electric cars ahead of the ban on new petrol or diesel cars beginning in 2030.
However, other areas are lacking. Currently, there is no overall government strategy to address heat and buildings or some aspect of their plan on reducing agricultural emissions. Tree-planting has also not yet risen to the goal of 30,000 hectares of trees a year, remaining below 15,000. Low-carbon production of hydrogen, a fuel that could be used for many things from transportation to power generation, is almost nonexistent despite the governments goal to produce 5GW a year by 2030.
In order to reduce the country's carbon footprint by 2030, the government is going to have to make more plans and follow through in order to properly hit that target.
