Marcus Rashford looked a player shot of all confidence at times last season. The 25-year-old underwent a surgery in the summer as he was struggling with injuries throughout the last couple of seasons. This meant he returned to the United side in October and he looked good in his initial comeback. Rashford scored a goal coming off the bench against Leicester in what was his first appearance since the surgery but he and United really struggled in that phase. This lead to Ole Gunner Solskjaer leaving the club on mutual grounds after United’s horrendous spell of form.
Ralf Rangnick then took charge as interim manager until the end of the season and Rashford was overlooked by the manager at times. When he did begin to feature, he looked half the player he used to be and did not possess the confidence to play with the freedom he enjoys. The 25-year-old was dropped from the England squad and it is safe to say this was his toughest period the club in terms of his form. Erik Ten Hag is now the manager and he has played a huge role in Rashford regaining his form. However, the forward deserves massive praise as he also worked hard to get back to his best.
The first step Rashford took was to get himself in peak physical condition. This was apparent to see in pre-season and his fitness level could not be higher. While he enjoyed pre-season and scored a few goals, it was still clear to see he was not back to his best. United started the season poorly with two defeats in their opening league fixtures which led to a massive amount of scrutiny on the players and the manager. There was a lot of attention being given to Cristiano Ronaldo and the lack of chemistry between him and the manager. Ten Hag trusted Rashford to feature in the next string of fixtures which included Liverpool and Arsenal. United’s performances improved massively and Rashford put in colossal displays in this period. He scored United’s winning goal against Liverpool and bagged a brace against Arsenal.
