How Professor Mann elevated Chandigarh's DAV College to prominence among India’s top shooters
By Saurabh Duggal
After securing an individual bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event, Manu Bhaker, with Sarabjot Singh, added another bronze in the mixed event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite hailing from different cities in Haryana—Jhajjar and Ambala—both top shooters share a common link: DAV College, Chandigarh, renowned for its exceptional sports legacy.
Additionally, shooter Vijayveer Sidhu and alumna Anjum Moudgil from DAV College are also competing in Paris.
Over time, DAV College has emerged as one of the most sought-after educational institutions for elite shooters in India, largely due to the efforts of Associate Professor Amanendra Mann, who heads the college's sports department.
Originally from the swimming discipline, Professor Mann transitioned into shooting as a technical official and maintained close ties with his shooters by officiating in national-level events.
"Mann sir has always been a great support to all his students. He is always there in whichever way we need his help," Manu Bhaker remarked after the 2023 Asian Games.
Mann, along with Associate Professor Shruti Shourie, conducted a University Grants Commission (UGC)-funded research project titled 'Psychological Skills Training Programme for Rifle and Pistol Shooters to Enhance Their Performance Levels' from 2013 to 2015. The research manual continues to benefit shooters by offering crucial psychological training.
"Aside from securing the necessary support from the college, Mann sir extends his help on the psychological front too. He is always there for the shooters even when their performance is down," said Abhishek Rana, a former student and coach of Olympic medalist Sarabjot Singh.
To further motivate his shooters, Mann personally traveled to the Paris Olympics at his own expense. "DAV College Chandigarh has a rich sports legacy, and the college provides the best facilities to its players," Mann emphasized.
DAV College's journey in shooting began with Chetanpreet Nilon at the 2010 Asian Games. Since then many of its students and alumni have brought honor to the country.
Professor Mann’s dedication has made a significant impact, setting a benchmark for excellence in sports education.
