Ronaldo's contract with Al Nassr makes him the highest-paid footballer in the world right now, with the highest contract ever signed by a footballer, earning £172 million per season.

Saudi Arabia has become synonymous with extreme wealth in football, particularly since the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund took over Newcastle United (PIF). There is little concrete information available about who owns Al Nassr (or Newcastle, for that matter).

This is because nation-states cannot own football clubs, but ways have been found to get around this by clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Al Nassr. The club is Saudi-owned, and there are very close ties to the Saudi royal family, which runs the country and controls its wealth.

The club is owned by Prince Faisal bin Turki, who has a net worth of $22.6 billion. The president of the club is Musalli Al-Muammar, and he was elected to the role by Al Nassr board members in 2021. Before that, he was the president of the Saudi Pro League. 

Hussein Al-Jabaa and Zaid Al-Jabaa co-founded Al Nassr in 1955, with former Saudi Prince Abdul Rahman bin Saud Al Saud becoming involved five years later as the club turned professional.

The Saudi Arabian Pro League is about to get a new spotlight after the owner of Al Nassr convinced Cristiano Ronaldo to come and play for his team.  They are also reportedly after many other European superstars like Sergio Ramos and Sergio Busquets.

It is highly challenging to assign a precise value to Al Nassr due to the opaque manner in which the club is funded and owned.

If you use Newcastle as an example, PIF's assets amount to £320 billion, placing them at the very top of football's rich list. In contrast, the value of Manchester City's owner is £21 billion.

This does not imply that Al Nassr is equally valuable, but it does provide a window into the kind of riches that prominent members of Saudi Arabian society can amass. Ronaldo has been added, bringing Al Nassr's annual salary to $278,584,102.
