Human Rights Watch stated on Thursday that the Taliban continues to detain, threaten, and torture women protesters in Afghanistan. Many families hope that by concealing their arrests, these activists will be released or face less harassment in prison.
The organization, in its report on its website, highlighted that the number of women protesters taken to Taliban detention centers is substantial, but accurate information is elusive, including for their families. They expressed concerns about the continued detention and the situation of Joulia Parsi, Neda Parwani, Manizha Sadiqi, and Parisa Azadi in Taliban prisons.
The two HRW officials wrote that alongside women protesters, the Taliban is pursuing and detaining those managing secret girls' schools. They reported that the Taliban holds women in degrading conditions and subjects them to occasional torture.
HRW noted that women protesters were initially forced to abandon street protests under Taliban pressure, and now organizing protests at home has become impossible.
Human Rights Watch called on countries worldwide to intensify efforts to stand by Afghan women in danger.
