This is no ordinary race!
This event takes runners 199 miles total from the top of Mount Hood to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. It's the most popular and largest relay race in the world!
You have 2 days to complete the course divided up into 36 legs. You have 12 members in your team and each one is expected to complete 3 legs. Each leg ends up being anywhere between 4 - 7 miles! Your entire race can range anywhere between 14.5 - 18 miles total
Throughout the course, you take two vans (with 6 team members) to rotate a new runner to complete their assigned leg. BTW, you basically live in these vans for the next few days constantly driving from checkpoint to checkpoint (eating, sleeping, healing, hydrating, etc.). You ALWAYS have somebody running on the course no matter what. That means some of us had to run at ungodly hours (such as 3am or 5am) or in the blistering heat in the late afternoon, or in the freezing temperatures of foggy filled mornings.
Also, to further put into perspective just how difficult it was, 1,100 teams entered this year, but only 867 were able to cross the finish line (which means 233 teams couldn't cut it). Btw, our team did finish it!
So yeah, this race was no joke. It really tests the limits of what you're capable of mentally and physically. To say that it was hard, exhausting, grueling, challenging, and overwhelming would be the understatement of the century. But, I did it! I manged to pull through.
Not only am I proud of accomplishing something that I deemed impossible a year ago, but I'm also so proud of everyone in our group. We truly came, we saw, and we conquered (veni, vidi, vici). We laughed and we cried. We felt misery and pain, but also joy and satisfaction. It at times hurt like hell and the sleep deprivation really wares you down, but the feeling of pure bliss and cathartiscim as we made it to the coast is virtually indescribable. It's a moment I will never forget. Absolutely amazing!
