India and Australia have been hit with significant fines by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their slow over rates during the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final at The Oval. In a thrilling match, Australia emerged victorious, defeating India by 209 runs in south London.
Following the conclusion of the match, it was announced that India would lose all of their match fees for failing to maintain the required overrate, while Australia would be docked 80 percent of their match fees. The ICC imposed fines of 20 percent of the match fee for each over not bowled within the designated time, as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
India fell short by five overs, taking into account the time allowances, while Australia was found to be four overs behind the target. These penalties serve as a reminder to teams to abide by the rules and complete their overs within the specified timeframe.
In addition to the team fines, India's opener Shubman Gill will face a separate sanction for seemingly criticizing the umpire's decision to dismiss him on the fourth day of the Test. This breach of conduct, which falls under Article 2.7 of the code, which prohibits public criticism or inappropriate comments regarding incidents in international matches, will result in Gill being fined an additional 15 percent of his match fee. Consequently, he will have to pay back 115 percent of his match fees in fines.
The catch by Cameron Green to dismiss Gill was deemed legitimate by television umpire Richard Kettleborough. However, Gill's subsequent social media post appeared to question the decision, violating the code of conduct.
The final day of the match witnessed a flurry of wickets before lunch, effectively ending India's hopes of a remarkable comeback. With an additional 15 minutes added to complete the final wicket, Australia's Nathan Lyon dismissed Mohammed Siraj, securing the World Test Championship title.
