I recently ate a delicious scoop of ice cream by the beach. It was flavoured ‘After Eight’ which is basically mint chocolate chip and it was one of the best flavours I have ever tried. It also got me wondering where ice cream originates from. Is it the land of gelato - Italy or somewhere random like Switzerland?
With a quick Google search and a few clicks later I found it! We can track the history of ice cream up to the second century B.C. and can follow its evolution across the globe. Alexander the Great, King Solomon and even Nero Claudius Caesar of the Roman Empire have been linked with some form of ice cream.
Almost a thousand years later, the famous Italian explorer Marco Polo returned to his homeland after journeying to the Far East. It is said that with him he brought the recipe for what is most closely resembled to sherbet and eventually evolved to ice cream sometime in the 16th century. England and France seemed to have discovered it at similar times as well as we can see through mentions of ‘Cream Ice’ on the tables of royals and aristocrats.
By the 18th century all of Europe knew of ice cream! 🌍
100 years later the ice cream found its way to the United States and from there it eventually ended up as the mass-produced pre-packaged tub that we can buy from the supermarket or get lovely delicious scoops at an ice cream shop like Apsara Ice Creams or Naturals. 🍨
