In golf some shots can be intimidating, especially the bunker shots. This is true even for professional golfers when encountering tight lies or when there is very little green to work with. I believe the same is the case with amateurs and club golfers. If I am to tell you that with a sound technique and a positive mindset, one can handle this challenging shot and improve your scoring from the bunker.
Each player is unique and has his/her level of confidence to play a shot. Notwithstanding that I will share some tips to help you be more confident during bunker shots. These are: -
Proper Setup - Set up is vital for executing a bunker shot. Begin by keeping your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and dig your feet into the sand for stability. Open the clubface to increase its loft and aim slightly left of the target.
Soft Hands – During tough moments and testing shots our hands tend to over react. Hence it is important to maintain a light grip on the club and use wrists to generate a smooth and controlled swing. Avoid gripping the club too tightly, as this can lead to tense and inconsistent shots.
Ball Position - Place the ball slightly forward in your stance i.e. closer to your front foot. This will help to catch the sand behind the ball and create the necessary lift to get the ball out of the bunker.
Swing Tempo – most of the golfers fear topping or digging into the ball. Thus, it is necessary to focus on maintaining a smooth and rhythmic swing tempo. Avoid rushing the shot or decelerating through impact. Practice your swing to find the right balance and tempo to consistent results.
Follow Through - After striking the sand, continue with your swing and follow through with your arms connected to the body. This will help to ensure clean contact with the sand and provide the necessary power to get the ball out of the bunker.
