Inception is directed by Christopher Nolan and as every Nolan movie is basically, it’s a unique mind-bending sci-fi movie. The plot is about how through an experimental military technology people’s subconscious can be infiltrated and information is extracted in a shared dream world. The conflict in the movie is the blurred line between these dreams and reality.
Dom (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are extractors and they commit corporate espionage by extracting valuable information from targets through their subconscious in this dream induced world. Satio gives Dom a proposal that he’ll through his contacts will wipe out Dom’s criminal record in the US which will allow him to meet his children finally. For this he has to do something which is considered as impossible, he has to plant an idea in Fischer’s mind. Dom gets his team together. Eames who’s an identity forger; Yusuf, a chemist with a sedative that will help them apply the “dream within a dream” plan. Adriana is an architect who’ll develop the dream’s labyrinth. The rule to know if you’re in the dream world or the real world is to keep a totem and spin it; if it stops, you’re in the real world.
The blurred line between the dreams and reality is seen when Dom is teaching Adriana about this dream world and Mal (Dom’s dead wife) sabotages the dream as she has done in previous dreams of Dom’s. We get to know that Dom and Mal used to live in a dream world and they lived for lifetimes there and didn’t grow old in the real world. Mal didn’t want out of the dream but Dom plants an idea in her head and she finally agrees to leave. Mal’s reality is destroyed she has now become sceptical of the real world and kills herself trying to free herself from this “dream”
Dom at the end does plant the idea in Fischer’s mind and is able to meet his children, in the last frame the totem doesn’t stop spinning or that’s how it seems, finally the blurred line is broken as Dom doesn’t care about it.
