There has been a dominance of cricket in India. Especially in the early 2000's Sports only meant Cricket, I hardly remember anybody being aware that Hockey is the national sport of India. 

Somehow the game of Cricket has killed all the other sports development in India, and not just Hockey's. Probably blame the government, the Sports Board, the media and the sponsors for being the culprit of the detriment of other sports in the country. 

It's still a common sight to see young children playing cricket with a bat and ball in the streets and lanes throughout, as every parent wants their kid to be like Dhoni or Sachin, but you rarely see anyone pushing their kids to become like Sindhu or Nehwal, or become like legends like Dhyan Chand, or PT Usha. 

The lack of support and aid from the government has led many budding sportsmen to stop their training. There are no proper facilities for players and many times it causes lack of nutrition which leads our players unable to cope and defeat international standards of the players across the world. The scarcity of stadiums, proper training and playgrounds is the reason why kids and players are unable to pursue sports as a career further. 

Sports is not given as much importance as a part of learning, education and development of an individual. Mostly in schools, the one game period in the timetable is taken by some subject teacher as a substitute to complete his/her syllabus.

But when it's about expecting medals in the Olympics, it's not less than any achievement for our players to be winning any medals, especially the recent win of Indian Men's Hockey Team. Getting a Bronze Medal in Hockey for India after 41 years, which is the national sport of the country, is surely not less than any Gold. 

Our players winning even 5 medals is both exemplary and historic, as these players did not just compete with other players of the world to win Medals in the Olympics, but to reach where they are today they have fought and are still fighting with the system.
