India is all set to embark on their journey in the 2023–2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with an exciting tour of the West Indies in July. Following their previous appearances in the WTC finals, India is eager to make their mark in the upcoming edition.
Their first challenge in the WTC cycle will be a two-match Test series against the West Indies, scheduled to take place in Dominica from July 12 to 16 and in Trinidad from July 20 to 24. Although they fell short in the previous finals against New Zealand and Australia, India remains a strong contender for the coveted title.
The WTC cycle will kick off with the highly anticipated Ashes series between England and Australia. India's next assignment after the West Indies tour will be a challenging away series against South Africa, slated for December 2023 and January 2024.
Returning to their home turf, India will face England in a thrilling five-match Test series in January and February 2024. The action doesn't stop there, as Bangladesh visits India for a Test series in September and October 2024. Soon after, New Zealand will arrive for a gripping three-match Test series in October and November 2024.
In a thrilling climax, India will travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a five-match series scheduled between November 2024 and January 2025. This series will mark the end of India's engagements at the WTC.
In the WTC, points are accumulated by teams based on a percentage system, where wins, ties, and draws grant them 12 points for a win, 6 for a tie, and 4 for a draw. The leaderboard, which will determine the top teams, will compete in the final match to be crowned the World Test Champions.
The WTC has revitalized Test cricket, injecting context and competitiveness into the format. Wasim Khan, the ICC's General Manager of Cricket, expressed his excitement, acknowledging the popularity of Test cricket and the high viewership for the WTC finals at The Oval.
