If there is one footballer in India, who has been widely misunderstood in the fraternity despite contributing so much for the cause of the National Team, then it should be Syed Nayeemuddin. What he has achieved in football, both as a player and a coach, can hardly be matched by anyone in Indian football. Nayeemuddin is the only person in Indian football, who has been conferred with both the prestigious Arjuna and Dronacharya awards for his exceptional skills as a footballer and a coach. He excelled in both the fields and dominated the Indian football scenario for more than 40 years.
Yet, Syed Nayeemuddin remains one of Indian football's most controversial characters for his rigid approach and having a philosophy that he refuses to compromise with.
As a footballer, Nayeem, as he was popularly known, was stylish and graceful, who rarely did anything ugly on the pitch. As a coach, he was a strict disciplinarian, who kept his wards under complete control. His way of handling the team, both at the club level and National level, led to many controversies and clashes with star players. But he refused to change his philosophy. During his second and final stint as the National Coach, his differences with skipper Bhaichung Bhutia reached a level where he finally was removed by the National Federation. But he had no regret. He said he did what he felt was the best for the boys and the team.
However, all said and done, Indian football would never be able to forget the contribution of Syed Nayeemuddin the footballer. His most memorable moments came in the 1970 Asian Games at Bangkok, when he led India to a bronze medal, India's last medal at the continental level. As a central defender, Nayeemuddin was simply exceptional. Tall and handsome, he rarely got involved in physical confrontations or committed nasty fouls to stop his opponents. Yet, his rock like presence always assured whichever team he played for - Hyderabad City Police, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan or Mohammedan Sporting. He was an epitome of courage and confidence, who inspired the entire team.
