Indian Filmmaker Sues Netflix for Alleged ‘Squid Game’ Plot Copying
South Korean series *Squid Game* became a global sensation upon its 2021 release. However, Indian filmmaker Sohum Shah has filed a lawsuit, accusing Netflix and *Squid Game* creators of copying the plot from his 2009 Bollywood film *Luck*. Shah claims that the premise of both works is strikingly similar—both featuring indebted individuals competing in deadly games for financial gain, with wealthy spectators betting on the outcomes.
According to TMZ, Shah alleges that *Squid Game* creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the show in 2009, the same year *Luck* was released. Shah claims that through extensive marketing, the *Squid Game* creators had access to *Luck*'s narrative. He is suing Netflix for copyright infringement and seeking a share of the streaming platform's post-*Squid Game* profits, which reportedly boosted Netflix’s market value by $900 million.
*Squid Game* continues to hold the title of Netflix's most-watched show, with its second season set to premiere on December 26, 2024.
