Historic Visit: This marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, a small Islamic sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia, which is a member of both ASEAN and the Commonwealth.

Strengthening Ties: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, the world’s longest-serving monarch, has visited India four times since 1992, playing a crucial role in fostering strong relations between the two nations.

Strategic Positioning: Brunei’s strategic hedging between the United States and China, given its location by the South China Sea and proximity to American bases in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Australia, benefits India.

Enhanced Cooperation: Increased collaboration in space, defense, and emerging technologies is expected to deepen the relationship between India and Brunei, which is home to 14,000 Indians.
