India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed on the moon on a exploratory mission on Wednesday.
India is the fourth country to reach the moon and the first country to land a spacecraft on the south pole of the moon.
"This is the victory cry of a new India," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in South Africa for the BRICS summit, watching the spacecraft land and waving his country's flag.
The Indian Space Agency announced on 6 August that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully placed in the lunar orbit more than three weeks after its launch.
This spacecraft was launched from the southeast coast of India this year.
"India is on the moon," the head of the Indian Space Research Organization said on Wednesday following the spacecraft's lunar landing.
Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has landed in the south pole of the Moon.
Earlier, a similar Russian spacecraft known as Luna-25 crashed on the moon due to technical problems. Russia's first space mission after 47 years failed.
Previously, China, Russia and the United States had succeeded in a controlled landing on the surface of the moon.
Reuters reported that people across India watched the spacecraft land on the surface of the moon, praying and cheering for its success.
