Another Indian student, who moved to the US in 2023 to pursue his master’s from Cleveland State University was found dead in Ohio’s Cleveland today.
The 25-year-old student from Hyderabad Mohammed Abdul Arfath was missing for nearly three weeks, now the Indian embassy in New York has confirmed the tragic news of his death.
"Anguished to learn that Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio. Our deepest condolences to Mr Mohammed Arfath's family," the embassy said in a post on X.
"@IndiainNewYork is in touch with local agencies to ensure thorough investigation into Mr Mohammed Abdul Arfath's death. We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India," it added.
The Indian embassy had previously communicated that they were coordinating the search efforts with Abdul’s family and local authorities. Today, they announced his passing.
Arfath's father Mohammed Saleem said they last spoke on March 7 and then his cellphone was switched off. On March 19, Mr Saleem received a call from an unidentified person, who said Arfath had been kidnapped by a gang selling drugs and demanded $1,200.
Several Indian and Indian-origin students have died in the US this year. The back-to-back deaths have left Indian students in the US and their families in India shocked and worried.
This is the eleventh Indian to die in the US this year. The string of Indian-origin students dying in the US continues.
