Although water is a State subject and a majority of the related activities come under the jurisdiction of State Government, the Central Government is taking many initiatives on its part for planning, development, management of water resources within the ambit of constitution of the country.
Inter-basin transfer of water or Interlinking of rivers
Due to wide variation in water availability across various river basins, the inter basin water transfer programme known as Interlinking of rivers programme has been conceived for transfer of water from surplus basins to deficit basins. Looking at the large variation in precipitation and available water resources in India, the inter-basin water transfers is imperative to address the imbalance in water availability across the country and to achieve water security in the country. However, there are many challenges like interstate and international issues, environmental, and resettlement and rehabilitation concerns etc. in the implementation of inter-basin water transfer projects in the country.
