Unresolved trauma from one generation can affect the wellbeing of the future generations. There are many ways through which the intergenerational Trauma can be passed down and it is mostly transferred through parent to child relationship.
In a good relationship, the parent is consistently loving, attentive and responsive to the child’s needs which helps the child in feeling safe and secure by knowing the parent is someone that they could rely on. It leads to a decrease attachment style whixh is characterized by a positive view of the self, better emotion regulation skills and an ability to maintain relationships that's based on trust and healthy boundaries.
Unresolved trauma can leave parents emotionally unavailable or unsafe. Their child may experience chronic or repeated abuse or neglect. It is sometimes referred to as complex trauma which can result in a wide range of impairments which includes emotional problems, substance use disorder or low self worth which is characterized by shame and guilt.
Here are four ways to break the cycle of generational trauma:
In a healthy way you can reconnect with anger
Create a space for all your feelings
Know that true love comes with understanding
