Worldwide, one in three women endure physical or sexual abuse, most often at the hands of a close partner.
Human rights are violated when women and girls are violently treated, and the immediate and long-term physical, sexual, and mental repercussions for women and girls can be fatal.
Violence has a negative impact on women's overall wellbeing and keeps them from contributing fully to society. Their communities, their families, and the nation as a whole are affected.
It has significant consequences, including increased demands on health care, court expenditures, and productivity losses.
Domestic abuse is prohibited by law in at least 155 nations, and sexual harassment at work is prohibited in 140.
However, there are still issues with enforcing these laws, which restricts women and girls' access to protection and justice. Violence is not sufficiently avoided, and when it does happen, it frequently goes unpunished.
